I am wondering how many drivers remember this! I was sitting here thinking of when I first started working at Winnipeg Transit back in 1979. Unlike today there were no air-conditioned buses (they arrived about 5 years ago the year after I retired). Power steering was just starting to arrive. There was only 1 maybe it was 2 buses with radios. The radios had a black button and a red button. The buses had a much better air flow so we could cool our self easier. Even with this on hot days, it was not uncommon to stop at almost every washroom . While in the washroom we would run the cold water tap as long as possible. Before leaving the washroom we wet our head and neck. Coming back to the bus we had wet hair, our shirt looked like we had just took a bath with it on. Sometimes there would be a wet paper towel wrapped around the back of your neck. This helped to keep you cool for a while, until the next washroom. Most who knew would hope they got a GMC bus as they had the best air flow and were the easiest to drive. They felt like they had power steering so less effort was required, especially on real hot days. Ah the good old days!
