I am working on an assignment for my BC first nations 12 course. The purpose is to educate people about the indian act and residential schools. i need people to respond with their thoughts to the message i am about to post. please help me get 100% on this assignment by replying. Indian act: The Indian Act said that First Nations people could not practice their culture, nor could they speak their language. Also it said that the First Nations did not have right to the land they lived on because they did not have it written down that it was theirs. They did not have the same rights as other Canadians, ex. they could not vote. They were not allowed to drink on the reserves. The famous Potlach was banned from being performed by all Natives. As a result most First Nations people (mostly children) lost all or most of their native culture during the time of the Indian Act. Residential Schools: The Indian residential schools of Canada were a network of ‘residential’ (boarding) schools for Aboriginal peoples of Canada (First Nations [Indians], Metis, and Inuit) funded by the Canadian governments Department of Indian Affairs, and administered by Christian churches, most notably the Catholic Church in Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada.” (“Canadian residential school system,”1) The main purpose of residential school was to assist in the assimilation of Aboriginal people into Canadian society. A lot of Aboriginal children attended the school from the mid-1800s until early 1970s. By the late 1960s, there were 10,000 aboriginal students that attended 60 schools. However, these children had to be separated from their family in order to attend the school. Even though some family lived close to the school, the students were not allowed to live outside the school because the government afraid that the students might take bad influence from their parents and community, and when they attend the school, they would not become civilized as Christian setting as the school expected. Over 50,000 first nation kids died in residential schools.
