I am writing to let you know about a very exciting project that I am involved with through our organization Green World Health Net. greenworldhealthnet.org/ The project is called the Boko Bed Net Project and it is a new approach to preventing malaria. If you are not aware, malaria is a serious problem: somewhere in the world a child dies every 30 second from this disease, 1 million people die of malaria each year in Africa alone, and 20,000 children will die from malaria this year in Ghana, the country were our project is being launched. The Boko Bed Net Project is a truly innovative, holistic, empowering approach to eradicating this very serious and deadly disease; the project links bringing solar power to communities and preventing malaria. As we have seen in our pilot study, the end results of implementing this project are that malaria infection rates are greatly reduced. In addition, off-grid households build their own solar systems and bring lighting to their homes, the environment is improved, and community members get an opportunity to earn money. I know it sounds too good to be true in that one project can accomplish all these things, but it is the reason we are so excited about the Boko Bed Net Project!
