I am yet to ascertain the wisdom behind the decision by the senate to endorse child marriage. Like most issues in Nigeria,religious sentiments are already high. I am surprised that educated persons are even trying to quote the constitution in support of the senate. I hope the Senate will reverse itself before the inflict more harm on us in the name of religion. The issue of early marriage have so many attendant social ills. The most prominents is the VVF sickness which is so prevalent in the north. Secondly is series of divorce cases. Because most of these girls are pushed into marriage before they are matured in mind to appreciate the essence of marriage or the man involved,it leads to conflicts of interest. For those defending it on religious grounds, please be informed that religion must conformed with changes and realities of life or it loses its essence. I am informed that apart from Saudi Arabia and Iran,almost all muslim countries have enacted laws banning child marrige and declaring it repugnant,unacceptable,and unislamic. The list is endless: Turkey,Indonesia,Pakistan,Malaysia,Egypt,Jordan,Senegal,the Sudan,Tunisia,Afghanistan,Lebanon,Palestine, United Arab Emirate,Bangladesh,Qatar,Bahrain,Dagestan,Albania,Bosnia,Somalia,Algeria,Libya,Mali and Syria.Islam like Christianity,is a noble,pure,honourable and ancient faith that seeks to protect the weakest and most vulnerable in the society,especially women and children. This law is made in bad faith. Its sole intention is to widen the societal gap between the elites and downtroden. How many of these “Honourables“ will allow their daughters marry before the age of 18? How many of them will allow their children to stay in without good and sound education. They are afraid of what happened in Tunisia,Egypt and other north African countries and wants to keep the largest population on a leash. We must not accept any law in the 21st century that is repugnant to natural justice,equity and good conscience. It is time to break away from bondage. Good morning.
