I applaud President Barack Obama for announcing executive action - TopicsExpress

I applaud President Barack Obama for announcing executive action that begins to address our nation’s broken immigration system. The President’s common-sense, responsible, and humane decision is fully within his legal authority. His action is grounded in 60 years of hard precedent. Since the 1950s, every president of both parties has used executive action to grant relief to immigrants. President Obama is using that same authority. As a result of President Obama’s actions, many families who would otherwise be torn apart will be allowed to stay together, and five million immigrants will now come out of the shadows, have background checks, pay taxes, and be held accountable. In addition, the President has made the wise decision to devote our scarce federal resources to deporting dangerous criminals and others who pose a real threat to public safety and national security. These actions will make us safer as a society and stronger as a nation. The President’s announcement is welcomed news for the immigrants covered under his action, and welcomed news for our country in general. Allowing these long-term, hard-working residents to remain in America strengthens our economy, our culture, and our values. Now that President Obama has acted, Congressional Republican leaders have the opportunity and the ability to quickly follow his lead by passing long-overdue bipartisan reforms to address the many immigration challenges still facing our nation. This is the right thing to do for our immigrant community, and the right thing to do for the future of our country. I look forward to Speaker Boehner and incoming Senate Majority Leader McConnell working with Democrats to fix our broken immigration system in a way that is fair, just, and in the best interest of our nation. #ImmigrationAction #Immigration #ExecutiveAction #ExecutiveOrder #PresidentObama
