I applaud the move, although I think the motives are not - TopicsExpress

I applaud the move, although I think the motives are not necessarily as altruistic as they are made to sound. People buy gasoline cars because they are convenient; you can go pretty much anywhere you want. Get an electric car, and you can drive to the end of the range and then you are stuck looking for a place to hang out for a few hours while you recharge. Electric cars cant compete with gasoline cars until there is infrastructure (rapid-recharge stations where you can swap out your old battery for a freshly charged one, for instance). The infrastructure wont be there until there are enough electric cars to make it profitable to build said infrastructure. So, by releasing the patents, Tesla is (wisely) looking for other companies to step up and make electric cars using the same technology and standards . . . thus, creating more of a demand for the infrastructure that Tesla needs for its cars to go mainstream. AND, Tesla gets to make sure that it sets the standards. (Think of Adobe and the PDF standard.) This is a clever piece of business strategy AND marketing.
