I arrive in Paris in 1968, having finished my studies in French at the University of Michigan. I find an apartment in a small street of the 15è arrondissement which is only one block long, with a bakery at the corner. A bakery that I frequent often. And shortly thereafter, this song comes out about my favorite breakfast of champions, the pain au chocolat - croissant dough around a square of dark chocolate. And its a mega-hit, sung by a certain Joe Dassin, who attended... the University of Michigan, where he started his singing career at Bimbos Pizza the year before I arrived, so we never met. Its a silly song, a symbol for the kinder, gentler France (to paraphrase Pres. Bush Sr.), but it exemplifies a year of my life, at least in my memory. https://youtube/watch?v=FaswDILZU8c
