I arrive to my house around the twilight hour from work, and am greeted like usual at the door by my cat with a meow and her pressing her hand against my hand as I pet her black fur. I smiled. She walked away a few feet from me and turns around and looks at me meowing, wanting me to follow, so I do. I thought she was just hungry but we were going down the stairs, to the basement, what would she want me to see in the basement? The temperature dropped suddenly, not gradually like usual. My basement has a short and narrow hallway with one door at the end leading to the water heater and circuit breaker as well as a huge room Ive considered renting out but it needs some renovation. she sat by the door and looked at me and meowed again, as if telling me to open the door, I find myself instead pressing my head against the door, I hear this clinking sound, like metal striking metal, over and over again, small and somewhat faint but not far off. I look at my cat Semira and she continues to stare at me, patiently waiting for me to open the door, confused I grabbed the doorknob and hesitated, not knowing why, I opened the door to find the room bare as usual and I flick the light on next to me. There was a crack on one of the small windows and I go to see if I could find what might have caused it and saw nothing. and realized the sound was gone and thought what if the noise wasnt metal clinking? what if it was the window? Semira did not enter I noticed, she stared at me, coldly, I asked her what? As if she would speak back, I felt uneasy, unsure and confused as this never happened but brushed it off as just a random event and before I walked through I glanced for some reason at the far end of the room in the corner and I see a smile painted on my wall, I walked out and rushed to the door and slammed it, turned the key that was in the keyhole and locked it from the outside, took the key and a mere second passed before the door was being assaulted by what I assumed were fists and screams, the door shuddered violently and I shrank back, my cat was nowhere to be found, I ran up my stairs and out my door, realizing my cell phone was in there, decided to go to a neighbor and knock on their door, I sprinted to the nearest house. and knocked furiously and yelling, begging for help. the door opened seconds later and Im met with a confused face, I need to use your phone quickly plea- my voice trailed off as my body suffered several chills up and down my spine. The smile was in my front lawn. I saw that he was wearing what seemed to be a sweater at one point, now a flithy rag splotched red and orange with its sleeves and a pair of dark pants, maybe slacks or jeans torn to hell and those sunken dark eyes. I pushed my way through and slammed the door, locking it. Im sorry I managed to stammer out, covering my face and struggling to steady my breathing. Po-police, please. I was shaking more and more as I pictured the face that accompanied that smile. My neighbor demanded to know what was going on, I told him I would explain later, his wife had come back with her cell phone with the police on the phone, as I looked at the cell phone to take it I noticed a small little girl in the door way leading to what I believed was their living room. I took the phone, and spoke to the police, telling them someone was in my house and I described what I saw to the police in a shaking quivering voice, I saw the husbands face pale, a gasp coming from the wife, and I heard footsteps scurry up the stairs and a door shut. her mother trailed behind. I finished talking to the police and they ended the call with telling me Back-up is on the way to your house sir, just remain....calm. I grunted and hung up and put the phone on the table, not a second passed and a knock was heard on the door, we froze, he glanced at me and mouthed What do we do? I glanced around and saw a knife block and walked my way quietly to it, too afraid that noise would set the man outside off and have him wail on the door like before, I grabbed the handle of the knife and looked up. It stood in the window not five feet away from me, I couldnt help it, I screamed and let go of the handle. I wouldve been relieved that I wasnt the only one that screamed, if I wasnt so afraid. The sunken eyes the met mine moved and glanced at the back door he was not about 10 feet away from. I heard footsteps rush out the kitchen and front door. I ran to the back door and tried locking it, too late, he opened the door slightly before I grabbed the doorknob and pulled it back. The face changed, the smile was gone, his eyes lit up with rage, and let go of the doorknob while howling and started to slam on the door like before, the glass on the door was cracking, I was gaped in horror before I came to my senses and locked the door, turned around and ran, the knife in my hand fumbling as I rushed up the stairs and opened the nearest door, a closet, I quickly went to another door and found myself in the little girls room, I didnt hear screaming anymore. I closed the door as quietly as I could and locked it, deciding the closet here might be a good choice and dove in as quiet as possible, meeting the wife and and child. Where is my husband? she asked. Not here. I replied quietly Now stay quiet.. I think... my voice trailed off shortly as we heard footsteps coming up the stairs and the girl whimpered. I felt awful for her, she buried her face into her mother and she tried to comfort the child by holding her tight as the footstep came to a stop at the top of the stairs, I heard a few more steps and a door creaking open, again the sound of steps and the opening of a door, the steps grew slightly fainter and I realized I wasnt breathing. I tried to calm myself, I took deep quivering breaths as I pressed my mouth to the sleeve of my jacket to muffle the sound. The steps grew farther and farther as well as the sounds of doors. I cursed myself for locking the door as i realized that was mistake as his steps grew closer after opening each door. Finally he reached ours, I heard the knob jiggle in place but there was no screaming, no pounding, sweetheart? I jumped, so shocked by the voice. The wife got up and opened the closet. honey? Is that you? Where did you go? Where did It go? the man outside the door chuckled a little and said I went for help, I went to the Howards across the street and pretty much repeated what our friend did but I looked outside their window and found the cops and told them that what we saw was at our house, theyre searching the house now, I have an officer with me. Mame? another voice said, Can you open the door? are you alright? Yes! She answered almost happily. my daughter and I just hid in the closet after we heard the trouble in the kitchen. I sat back and was relieved that it was over, I heard her open the door and heard a sickening squishing sound, I turned to the doorway. and saw the thing with his hand in her stomach, it sounded like he was toying with her insides as he said switching between both voices he mimicked perfectly Youre safe in my hands sweetie., she was about to scream when he put his other hand around her neck and squeezed, I gaped in horror and reached over to the little girl to cover her eyes, unable to look away, I gripped the knife in my hand and rushed the thing choking the life out of my neighbor with the knife out-stretched, he barely moved as the knife stuck in the womans flesh. I took out the knife, still trying to strike him, his smile name fading, dodging every swing, every stab. I was out of shape and I knew it. Its energy didnt seem to end, It wasnt panting, it didnt move any less swiftly, I couldnt even manage to graze his clothes. I stopped, panting and trying to think a way out of this mess, he started giggling then snickered smugly and finally burst out laughing. I tried to yell whats so funny?! all that came out was a quiet and shaky Wh-what? he stared at me, instantly making me feel even more uneasy, I felt a hand behind me on my leg. little girl, go hide, Ill try to hold him off for- I felt shoot through-out my leg as something slid into my leg. You speak up when you talk to daddy. said the little girl with the sunken, dark eyes.
