I arrived at the forge just before the sun set that night. The sounds were muted around me which did not surprise me for I knew that the forces of the Shadows were gathering. The very air seemed to freeze around me as I put my horse into his safe and warm stable. Exiting into the twilight I saw something standing just beyond the barrier set my my Lady. With my hand on the pummel of my sword I walked towards the dark mass. You are not welcomed here. I said. My eye never leaving the beast who stood before me. I care not what welcome I receive for soon you and yours will be of my nourishment it hissed. Its eyes glowed a malevolent red as it watched me. I laughed turning my back to it. Walking but a few feet it called me. Quan of the Sea People. I know your heart. And it shall be mine soon enough. it laughed. Poison oozed from its teeth dripping to the ground...small smoke trails rose from where it touched. I turned slowly pulling my blade from is home, its song shrieked out in answer to its challenge. The call of storms, the crashing of the great seas upon the cliffs of what was left of my home. I called out my own song joining the song of my blade as I pointed its tip towards the beast that stood before me. I say this animal. Even if I fall in battle. I will have your head. I do not fear you nor your dark ones. Now go back to the hell that brought you upon our lands. Return to the darkness that makes you what you are. The scent of ozone and salt filled the air around me. As the blade began to glow blue. Then white as it tried to jump from my hand seeking the creatures heart. The creature shrieked as it faded into the darkness as the very air around it seemed to glow a pure white, forcing it back into the darkness from whence it came. A creak of thunder shook the very ground around me. The Thunderer was not happy with this intrusion into my peace. The night sounds came back as I sheathed my sword. The songs of the night owls call. The crickets harmony. The wolfs call. The gentle breezes through the dying leaves. I walk to the forges door and entered. The soft glow of the embers greeted me with it warm embrace as I lit a lamp that sat next to the door. Home, it said a I looked about. My eye fell upon the statue of my Lady. Walking towards it I bowed then said... My Lady. I am troubled for this is the second time that I have heard that I will not survive the coming battle. I pray that this is but a dream, a nightmare. But if it is to be ...then so be it. I just ask that if I fall I take as many of the Shadowen I can with me. I placed as small offering before her and bowed once more. Turning I went to my furs and sat down. My boots came off with a grateful sigh. Raising once more I removed my breast plate and leaned it on the post next to my bed. This was joined by my shield and sword. All close to my hand if needed. Walking back to the doors I closed them and braced them for the evening. Walking to the fire pit I checked it and then added another small log to keep it burning. Pushing the coals around it I felt its warmth grow. Turning once more I returned to my bed and crawled into it. I cupped my hand behind my head a looked up into the rafters. I drifted off to sleep as the flames danced about the fresh wood. I listened to the hiss and popping it made as the flames kissed it gently. My eye closed as these sounds seemed to fill the air about me.
