I asked for a new pencil sharpener this year. The electric one I had for several years died. In my box I found 3 small handheld sharpeners. I teach 150 students which actually is less than 1/2 if my encore peers. I have one left. One broke. One disappeared. Since the first day of school I asked students to bring a single marble compostion notebook for my class. I still have students who do not have them. I purchased some for 50 cents and said I would sell them for 50 cents. I just gave them to students who I knew needed the help.One year I brought breakfast almost daily for one student, paid for student lunches, taken a few shopping for clothes. The rewards are the hugs, smiles, feelings of relief from students. The punishment? The polititicians who continue to beat us down and have no clue what it is like to fight for these kids.
