I asked my brother, a police officer, if it wasnt hard for him to give a little old lady a ticket that would for sure cause her to lose her drivers license. Now, you who know my brother also know he is one of the most caring, thoughtful, and reasonable people you are going to ever meet (unlike his brother, you might say). His answer: No. My job is simple. I enforce the law. My son, also a police officer, caught some heat when he got a radio call to remove some street barriers that had been put up on the street in front of his chiefs house. He refused. His reasoning: I swore to uphold the laws of the state and of the city, not the arbitrary rules of a person, no matter who they may be. On another occasion, another one of my brothers, also a police officer, pulled over a man who happened to be a Priest. When my brother handed him a ticket for the traffic violation, the priest responded, You dont know who I am, do you? The man went on to describe how he was Father ______ from ____________ Parish. My brothers response: Then you should know better. and gave him the ticket. At what point enters human compassion? When do we look the other way, let them off with a warning or change the rules. There must be a foundation for truth that does not bend no matter who the offender, no matter who the enforcer. Without that standard we live in a lawless society where everyone does what is right in their own eyes. Group-speak rarely goes well. Society is held in check by something greater. And, so, the foundations of Truth that cross cultures, times and places must also at some point come into this equation that defines Right and Wrong. Moral relativism does not serve well in critical decisions and institutions that require consistency and high standards. There are no bend situations and zero tolerance limits that do not allow a well, how do you feel about this? Lets take a vote. decision. Drawing a line puts people on one side or the other. For the caring person, it will always hurt when someone chooses to cross that line and decide on a way that is against The Law! biblehub/romans/9-3.htm
