I attended a seminar yesterday on Art. 370 in Delhi. I was shocked by the malicious propaganda when I listened to a very highly placed speaker saying that because of Art. 370 there is a dearth of educational institutions and hospitals in J&K; insult of the national flag is not punishable in J&K; females of J&K lose their PR status after marrying outsiders, etc. The speaker needs to be informed that the insult to the national flag is punishable in J&K also under the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971; and a Full Bench of the J&K HC has already clarified in Sushila Sawhney case that there is no law in J&K which prescribes that the females of J&K lose their PR status after marrying outsiders. I personally feel that there is a lot of myth about Art. 370 which is being deepened by propaganda. And so there is a very pressing need to initiate an informed debate on this subject. I appeal to all the mainstream political parties of J&K to burry their political differences in the larger interest of the State at least on this very crucial issue and make a concerted effort on one common platform to dispel this propaganda being spread all over; otherwise it will be too late to recover and the countrymen from outside J&K will start looking at the advocates of the Art. 370 as anti-national. Its time to act!
