I attended a session at MLA on career diversity for Humanities PhDs, and learned two major things: 1.You MUST have a professional digital profile if youre going on the academic job market; 2. You MAY have more employment options than most of us realize. The MLA and AHA are have received Mellon Foundation grants to explore these issues. The AHA is further along, and its website is well worth a look (with the caveat that--as one panel member suggested--that public history work looks a lot more like academic history than is the case in English). Mellon reportedly also has grants to support internships for graduate students that will aid career diversity; Im looking into this now, and am open to ideas.
