I awoke this morning in a space of deep and quiet gratitude. My thoughts began to slowly stir and I recalled moments from my seminary experience at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. It was during the foundations portion where we learned of diversity and inclusion with Valerie Batts and the team from Visions, Inc. The moments that rise to the surface for me today are in regards to one of the Visions Guidelines – Exercising Both - And Thinking. So, through the lens of both and thinking; I found myself considering the term or idea of for good. In my thoughts, this has been about a measure of time; for good as synonymous with forever, without change and from now on if you are from deepest parts of the southern culture. My spiritual journey has allowed me the blessing of expanding my perspective to also consider at the same time the idea of for good as a statement of intent and purpose. Thus in my both and moment, I could hear the voice of the Divine whispering through the stillness of the morning air that from now on, the power of what we do and who we are in the world is not found in the work itself, but in the depth of the intent as that is what will last long after we have departed for another journey. Rick McCall, one of my seminary professors in a context of studying liturgy (the work of the people of God) would often, beg the question of “Why do this?” That question for me had always been rhetorical; until today, where it emerges for me as foundational and my answer is of the both-and variety. When asking my heart why do anything, the answer for me this day is for good, for the good them who love God, for the good whole and all of the pieces and parts, from now on, for now and forever. So as you go about your day today, I invite you into a space where little becomes much when we can suspend our either or lessons and attempt to exercise the expansive and inclusive idea of welcoming both more thoughts along with lessons about things that we know all about and nothing at all about and call it blessed; while being a blessing. When we do this we make plenty of good room for the growth of others and create opportunities for all of us to know more of our truth, while finding our way and taking our place of goodness and greatness. I believe that this is our gift to this present moment; one making a way for another, and another, and another. So with that beloved, let your timing and your intention always be for good. Sending you really big love as you do this work!
