I believe a lot of diets, such as paleo, gluten free etc. work - TopicsExpress

I believe a lot of diets, such as paleo, gluten free etc. work because of one common thing. They force you to make more conscious food choices. Thats it. You cant go into the supermarket and just pick up whatever you feel like because it has to fit in with the diet. Instead of being guided by desire, you are guided by thought. Tracking your food with an app such as MyFitnessPal, does exactly the same thing. It forces you to think about what youre eating. However tracking your food has one major benefit over a diet. It paints a picture of what youre eating, you can see the costs (macros) of food and it educates on food composition. It shows you WHY you should choose certain foods, not just WHAT foods to eat. Knowing a brownie isnt a good choice is one thing. Knowing a brownie isnt a good choice because the sugar content wouldnt allow you any more carbs with your other meals, is another thing entirely. When people have this education and flexibility with their nutrition, the diet book section of Waterstones will be obsolete. Ps. I mean no offence to brownies, I love them. Especially when they are mixed in with chocolate ice cream and from Ben n Jerry. Those guys are awesome.
