I believe everyone knows the sad story of the runner dying in the half marathon this weekend. My sincerest condolences to his family. However what you may not know is the first "volunteers" to render emergency aid were: runners included a Navy Seal, a MD and District Chief/paramedic and L-2924 member Mike Barakey who provided CPR until the first fire responders arrived onscene. The first unit to arrive was a two man fire response team followed by a 2nd fire 2 man unit and finally an ambulance staffed with career ems. This all took place in the street at our building at 211 24th Street & Pacific Ave. While I have nothing against the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue squad, I support giving credit were credit is due. I appreciate the efforts of the runners to stop running and render aid to a mortally injured runner and the VB firefighters who responded to assist until the career ems ambulance arrived to transport. Just providing the truth in a very sad situation and clarifying the details that seemed to get missed by the local media.
