I believe in fair play - in sports, in life, and even in politics. Peter Shumlin received more votes than Scott Milne for Governor. We all have theories about why the race was so close, and many have opined about the message voters were sending. One thing about which there is no debate is that more voters selected Peter Shumlin than Scott Milne. Now the conversation turns to fair play. Scott Milne continues to drag out his deliberations about whether hell wage a campaign with the legislature to vote for him rather than Peter Shumlin when it convenes in January. Can you imagine the howls of protest wed have heard from Legislators in Mr. Milnes party back in 2002 if the Legislature had seriously contemplated voting for either Peter Shumlin or Anthony Pollina (who combined to receive 56.9% of the vote) for Lieutenant Governor instead of Brian Dubie, who received the most votes with a mere 41.2% of the total votes cast? The Legislature cast an overwhelming tripartisan vote for Mr. Dubie. That same day the Legislature passed another overwhelming tripartisan vote in favor of Jim Douglas for Governor over Democrat Doug Racine. Fair play is always the right style of play, in this instance for no greater reason than what goes around comes around. In 2002 Jim Douglas and Brian Dubie were elected by the Legislature despite relatively low vote totals. This time it should be Peter Shumlin who receives this affirmation from the Legislature. If you cant shake hands with your opponent at the end of the game, you havent played fair. Its time for Mr. Milne to concede, shake hands with Peter Shumlin and let Montpelier focus on the real issues of the day.
