I appreciate hearing from you and I am grateful for the opportunity to respond. As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, this is an issue I have been following closely. Current federal law prohibits the cultivation and sale of marijuana. However, several states have allowed the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes under the supervision of a physician. I believe that more research is needed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of marijuana and its active ingredients, and I support allowing this research to move forward. In particular, I fully support Governor Deals decision to fund clinical trials to explore the efficacy of cannabinoid oil (CBD), a non-psychoactive component of marijuana. I understand that there is evidence that shows promising improvement for the use of CBD, particularly to prevent or mitigate seizures in children. I sympathize with those parents and children suffering through these symptoms, and I am disappointed to see any parent of a sick child forced to move to another state to access promising treatments. I will continue to support the efforts of Rep. Allen Peake to make CBD available to qualified children suffering from seizures. Thank you again for contacting me.
