I believe my sister from Birdsprings AZ, said it best ( Wagner Vee ) who use to work inside the NN President office. Wow, all this debate about Navajo fluency. Im very fluent in my valuable language, because my parents and grandparents took the time to teach me. Im very thankful, grateful to the them. However, I do have children that have different level of fluency in the Navajo Language and thats my fault. But like every parent out there, I want them to be successful, to be at the same level or beyond other nationalities. That requires them to be off the reservation, away from the language, the traditions, the teachings, etc. As a Nation we dont offer, we cant even begin to explore ways to offer the education they desire on our own land. Instead, we give them money to go off reservation to go to school. And when they get educated, we turn them away. Ive witnessed first hand a NN Vice President trying to lobby for Navajo Language to be made a part of NN Schools as a requirement. Yet, the same council that now crying fluency, didnt want to listen. They said it would cost too much to go against state education departments to make it a part of curriculum. Now, the same council willing to spend money on court fees......i hope council consider it now otherwise we will have other young, educated, intelligent potentials that get shot down. It takes a whole village/tribe to raise a child, seems like we failed some. If you all want Navajo Fluency by all means put in our schools. Maybe Chris be the one to get that done......based on his experience. Yes, my children are limited in Navajo, but I love em, and they understand the important things; love, care, support and respect. They speak with their heart most of the time, and its lovely and easy to understand.
