I believe that Abbass speech was mainly directed to his home - TopicsExpress

I believe that Abbass speech was mainly directed to his home audience who wanted to hear outrage from him regarding the death and destruction of Gaza by Israel this past summer. They got what they wanted. It was not a good speech for Israelis, that is clear. His speech voiced clear despair with negotiations that have produced nothing. In his view (and I agree) it makes no sense to renew negotiations with Netanyahu (who didnt even participate in the negotiations directly) unless there is pre-agreement to deal with borders and security first within a time frame of no more than 3 months. After that, negotiations could continue on the other issues for another 9 months. Without agreement on borders and security, there is no possibility for agreeing on the other issues. It is essential that the terms of reference for negotiations clearly determine that the end result will be the implementation of two states for two peoples. It is absolutely essential for each side to know what its borders are in order to continue. Abbas knows well that the US will veto a Security Council resolution on setting a time frame for ending the occupation. He knows well that a General Assembly resolution has no meaning in practical terms. He did not present an additional strategy for moving forward if his proposals do not work, yet he clearly stayed within the framework of a peaceful non-violent resolution of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Calling Abbas a terrorist or declaring that he is using diplomatic terrorism is incitement and those who fail to recognize that Abbas remains committed to a peaceful solution is in fact only strengthening the claim that those who say so (Netanyahu, Liebrman, et.al) are the ones who are not partners for peace. In all of the last years that Netanyahu has been in office he has not demonstrated in real terms in any way (beyond his Bar Ilan speech) that he, as Israels leader, is a partner for peace - quite the contrary. Lets face it, as long as Netanyahu is Israels leader, there will not be any peace with the Palestinians. I only wish that I will be proven wrong by saying such as clear statement.
