Grew up in LA after his family left Iran in 1979. Hes highly critical of the new atheism (to be fair, just about every Marxist, radical theologian, Hegelian, critical theorist and leftist intellectual on the planet is dismissive of the new atheism, especially of Sam Harris). But you might dig Aslan anyway - hes got a lot of very insightful stuff to say....
