I believe that finally the anti-vaccine movement is starting to experience a set back from many fronts. Their reasoning for objecting to vaccines has no scientific base and it is just spreading very dangerous misinformation. On a personal note. Yesterday I was interviewed by a very nice young couple expecting their first baby in February. The starting of the conversation was: Doctor Nataloni, we just want to let you know that we have decided NOT to vaccinate our baby in the first year of life, and we will think on what to do later. I then asked them how they had come to the decision of not vaccinating. The answer of course was the usual overwhelming the babys system toxins in vaccines thimerosal and such. What follow was actually quite an in depth conversation (while I had several patients waiting to be seen!!!) and one by one I counteracted their point. They seemed quite surprised to learn about the truth and honestly admitted to that. So my next question was:May I ask you where you are getting your information from? This was their answer, which totally blew me away: We have been in contact with a PEDIATRICIAN in Nassau County who has been telling us about the dangers of vaccines. We would like to see him, but first he is far away,second he really does not see patients in person. He is available on line only, so we dont feel comfortable with that part. We want a pediatrician who actually examines our baby. Good for them for thinking that way and being much smarter than the doctor. My point here is that this is becoming a little scary, and people are truly getting information from lots of quacks. I will look that pediatrician up and see what I can get about him. Please be careful where you get your information from. Vaccines are safe. I am actually thinking about maybe having some meetings, outside of office hours, to discuss this issue with parens. I strongly feel I need to be a little more pro-active about this issue. Let me know your thoughts on that.
