I believe that it is every individuals right to choose whether or not to take a vaccination of any sort. I do not have any particular stump to grind either for or against the flu vaccination, other than my own questions as a result of some of the more recent study results that question its efficacy overall. It is not my intent to try to sway anyone either for or against. Having said that, let me state that this year, I was very ambivalent about taking the flu shot. I do not believe that it makes a person ill in and of itself, however, I do have a growing suspicion that the stress placed on a bodys immune system from taking it might well weaken resistance to other illnesses for some period of time. And so Ive been very torn about whether or not to take the vaccination this year. My personal self-defense plan includes barrier protection (masks/gloves), careful hand hygiene, and herbal preventatives and treatments. My facility does not mandate the vaccination, however, if not taken, they do mandate masking. We also mask visitors and patients, btw. So the moment of decision came, and I opted to take the vaccination. My personal experience this year has been an unpleasant one. I did not incur the usual site of injection discomfort that many of my coworkers did. I have, however, noticed marked fatigue, muscle aches, irritability, and in the three days immediately following the injection, muscle cramping and spasms. In short, I just dont feel very good. Wednesday will be a week since I was vaccinated. Well see if things improve. Meantime, Im trying to boost my immune system to overcome this. I hope this personal testimonial will help anyone else who is on the fence about whether or not to take the vaccination. I suspect that, if I had it to do over again, I likely would not this year.
