I believe that learning a language is process of gathering tools - TopicsExpress

I believe that learning a language is process of gathering tools to use in expressing thoughts, ideas, and ourselves. Those tools are essentials for process of putting holes in the language barrier, of convincing people who cannot understand you that you are an individual different from the others around you, capable of thinking and worth knowing. In those process, a teacher is resource, a potential-recognizer, a guide who can show learners how to get where they want to go and break down the barriers in the way. Of course its the learners who decide what they want out of learning; they are active participants in the teaching/learning process, taking in the tools that seem useful and discarding or ignoring those that arent. Teachers and learners all deal with the barriers of the language being learned, just as they deal with the goals, expectation, assumptions, and emotions that go teaching and learning a language.
