I believe the guilty verdicts for Dontaye Singletary were a clear message sent by the members of the jury that a murder-for-hire of one of our residents simply will not be tolerated in our county. There was exceptional police work done by many officers and detectives of the Portage Police Department unlike the portrayal of “poor” work made by the Defense during the trial. Our Patrol Officers responded to the initial call and secured the scene, our Detectives worked tirelessly to identify a suspect or suspects and once one developed, we sent our SWAT Team to Gary, Indiana to track him down. Due to constant pressure applied by our department, as well as other agencies, Dontaye Singletary eventually turned himself in to the Gary Police Department. A homicide investigation is one of many layers and immensely time consuming. Detectives Vaughan and Regnier logged countless hours investigating and preparing for this trial and must be commended for their efforts. Prosecutors Frost and Polarek also must be commended for their undaunted presentation of the evidence. Their commitment to this endeavor was unwavering. Our condolences continue to go out to the entire Griffith family. A very dangerous criminal was taken off the streets, tried, and convicted. We can all rest a little easier tonight.
