I bet Gershwin never imagined this version! Billy Stewart started out in gospel with his three brothers at the age of 12, a few years later he was singing with The Rainbows with a young Marvin Gaye. Billy was discovered playing piano in Washington by Bo Diddley who hired him on the spot and hooked him up at Chess Records. Billy Stewart had a unique singing style that include a lot of scat references. On this date in 1970, the brand new Ford Thunderbird Billy was driving careened off a bridge crossing The Neuse River in North Carolina where Stewart and three of his band members were killed. His estate sued Ford Motor Co saying the car malfunctioned. Ford won the first trial but settled out of court after an appeal.
