I broke the news of the ruling to friends at work. Of the four, - TopicsExpress

I broke the news of the ruling to friends at work. Of the four, only two even remembered the case of Eric Garner. After a brief explanation, one said This soon after Ferguson? Theyre gonna be pissed While we all agreed it was an injustice this quote was stuck in my head. It was similar to something I had read before. Then I remembered Martin Niemöllers poem First they came and I realized the position we find ourselves in. First they came First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. -Martin Niemöller I dont care what tribalistic concepts you adhere to, when you see injustice you must speak out. I will admit I dont always practice what I preach, but this is not just an injustice for some, it is injustice to all. Im thinking that now is the time to find our common ground, to unite, to stand together. Put the petty differences aside, try to focus on what we have in common rather than what separates us. Participate in a protest or rally, or share the opinion of others through social media that you may not normally protest for, but you recognize the injustice. Then ask them to share your cause as well. We arent going to do this with a multitude of little battles fought against better equipped foes. We are going to need to come together and fight each others battles. If you dont fight for someone else how can you expect them to fight for you?
