I called this one a couple of years ago, when Google Labs spawned Ingress. Ingress is a massive multiplayer, location aware game that has players going to physical locations to perform tasks that influence the game. It requires both GPS and data services, and is available on both Android and IOS phones on all carriers. When something is free, youre the product. So what could Google possibly get from a veritable army of players, on foot, walking around with handsets on all competing carriers, repeatedly performing GPS tagged actions? The best mapping of carrier signal strengths, data performance and response times that money cant buy.
