I came across Nick Drake when- while at Heathrow airport waiting - TopicsExpress

I came across Nick Drake when- while at Heathrow airport waiting for my flight back to the US after living 5 months in Oxford for a study-abroad program in Oxford Univs Oriel College - I wanted to spend all the quid I had left. So I wandered into Virgin Records and bought the first CD that caught my eye without even listening to it. Anyway, when I finally did, I was enthused it was a keeper! Looking into who this dude was whose CD I had been drawn to, I learned that Nick Drake (1948-1974) was only 26 when he died of an overdose. He attended the Univ. of Aix-Marseille in France and later the Univ of Cambridge where he read for a degree in English Literature. Though he was smart, he wasnt really motivated, not even to promote his music. He just wanted to listen to and write music; and get high. Ironically, he gained popularity posthumously when in 1999, his album Way to Blue (the same one I bought in 2004) gained popularity and sold 100,000 copies in the UK alone. Pink Moon might be familiar, since it was used as background music in the ad for the VW Cabriolet. It was also in the soundtrack of the movie The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
