I came across a statement this week that shortly & accurately portrayed the worlds attitude on relationships. It read: Respect yourself enough to walk away from anyone or anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy. At first thought, perhaps its easy to think, Darn right! If the bum (or bummette) is a burden, Im out! Im going to capitalize some words, and I want you to re-read the statement: [YOU] respect YOURself enough to walk away from anyone or anything that no longer serves YOU, grows YOU, or makes YOU happy. How does it look & sound now? Can you see how selfish this statement is? Can you see how this statement is all about one person and no one else? APPLICATION ==> As not to offend you, Ill throw myself under the bus. Its easy for me to think that the world revolves around me, and that everyone is on earth for my pleasure, benefit, service, and advancement. When I begin to think like this, I become disappointed when things dont go my way, let down when others dont perform according to my expectations, and irritated when others dont agree with my opinion. That, my friend, is selfishness. And, it flies in the face of Philippians 2:3, which says: Do not act out of selfish ambition or conceit, but with humility think of others as being better than yourselves. I have a sneaky suspicion that the same selfish tendencies I battle declare war against you from time-to-time, also. That said, lets pray that we will not look at others, especially our mate, as people who are on earth for the sole purpose of supporting our growth, happiness, and well-being. Lets be bigger than that. Lets be more considerate than that. Lets be more Christ-like than that. Standing for your healthy marriage & functional family ... MarriageWorks
