I came across this list of tips today concerning posting about dogs (and other pets for that matter) and commenting on posts. It might seem harsh but it is so true - those of us that volunteer in rescue and network in these groups for animals have seen all of this. Please take the time to read: 1)Just because a dog is in a shelter doesnt mean that its going to be put down. Unless you have first hand knowledge of the working of a shelter dont suggest that folks adopt a dog because it might be put down. For example, the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter here in Billings has a very good adoption rate and they are not putting animals down left and right. That is a common misconception about them. If you belong to a group that allows folks to post animals, dont push people to adopt because a dog might be put down. That is stupid. 2)Be pro-active. If you want a dog/cat/fish/bunny whatever, LOOK! Dont just go on an animal group and say, I want a french bulldog Go to Petfinder, search your states shelters and rescues. If you are too lazy to be proactive to find your own fur kid, your too lazy to own one. 3)Dont post, I want a free purebred, housebroken, good with cats, kids, etc. for free Um, dream on hooker. 4)By asking for a free dog or crying you are poor but have lots of love to give for a pet.....really? What about vet care, food, emergencies? It looks bad. 5)If you have to re-home your pet please ask for an adoption fee. Even if you are not charging one, just post that you want one anyway. It weeds out the scumbags who are looking for free dogs to do bad things with. 6)Dont reply to a post for an animal with, Gosh I would take it but, ... The people posting the ad could care less if you would take it. If you cant dont get their hopes up by replying with that garbage. They dont know you nor care why you cant adopt. Just read the post and move on. 7)If you are interested in a dog, dont post, Call me or the vague, Tell me more about this dog. You call them! Shelters and Rescues dont have the man power or time to just call some random person because they say, Call me Call you why? Which dog are you interested in? Tell you more what? Everything is in the listing, what else do you want? Call the folks who have the dog to help answer your questions. They are not mind readers and have no idea what else you want to know. So you need to be pro-active and call them.
