I came across this powerful poem years ago... All Alone in a Room... She sat in the room all alone No place to go and nobody to see. All that she owned was in a bag From her husband she had to flee. Her baby girl was in need of a change And her life was in need of one too. Holding her tight and thinking of her life What in the world was she going to do? She had to leave, just get away What if he had hurt their child? When she looked into his eyes at night All she saw was something wild. He made promise after promise Hed get help to stop the abuse. Now she was here with a black eye And a tooth that is loose. It was time for a fresh start. Tomorrow, shed go get a job But tonight she would think of her life And break down and sob. She saw the signs when they first met He was always fighting and screaming But in his strong arms and in his bed She found life, found meaning. Soon, she moved in with him And started living her life. It wouldnt be too long now She would become his wife. It started with just a slap or two But she deserved it, she told herself. Then the open hand was replaced with fist. Then it was the statue off of the shelf. Now she sits in the room all alone No place to go and nobody to see. All that she owned was in a bag From her husband she had to flee.
