I came out of a panel this afternoon and walked along the leafy closed-off street, full of book-stalls and passersby, when I heard what sounded like Edith Piaf, over a loudspeaker. I ambled along, not exactly listening, but my heart lifting a bit at those liquid, soulful trills, and then I came suddenly upon the singer: a real person, a black man in his fifties, with a lined, warm face, singing in beautiful French about the wrenching life of the heart. I stood, watching and listening to his sweet, rich, melody until I had to leave. Then I turned and walked on beneath the dappled light, and I imagined that everyone around me was speaking French. I had to remind myself. chicagotribune/entertainment/books/printersrowlitfest/
