I can still recall my surprise seeing that huge white lady in the water with a guy in a suit aproaching her. It must have been late 60 is or early 70is. Color tv did not found its way to our home yet, thats l know for sure. I could not figure out why the heck they need to stand both dressed in a water making funny unatural gestures, like being a bit drunk, especially her. Later, much later, l learned, l had witnessed one of the most iconic scenes of Italian cinema ever. I must have been not more than 9 at the time and indeed those bobs were really huge and so incredibly white. While Marcello stood there somehow lost it was Anita pose that l can still recall while standing she was standing there in the middle of the pond in a full glory under the falls of Fontana del Trevi. Time has gone by. She became an old lady too like the rest of us. She lost her glow, years brought out despair. Ending up in a totally opposite situation from what Fontana del trevi offered to her for a brief moment... the reality she met afterwards tells a story of downfall. Sick, in a hospital... broke old lady she became. I will pay respect to Anita departure today. I will leave aside paying tribute to illusions cinema created to her and to us, l will instead think of her as a human being, a lady that reached 83 and died. l hope she found her glory not only when she was not under the spotlights magically embracing an illusion in La dolce vita with Marcello but most of all in her private life and moments reminiscing of time and people she met happy. Rest assured l do understand it was just an illusion what l saw at the age of 9 while watching her incredible white pose suggestong reality. I hope she did too.
