I cannot believe we have finally arrived at The Monkees. This is indeed a happy day. The group was formed by TV producers seeking to form a band in order to capitalize on the success of the Beatles. The Loving Spoonful were originally set to star, but had to bow out due to contractual issues. Other groups, including the legendary DC5, were considered but finally producers decided to put out a casting call for the entire group. They put out an ad but the only one to be hired through open casting was Mike Nesmith. Davy Jones was already known from doing Oliver on Broadway and was asked to audition. Mickey Dolenz heard about it from his agent and Peter Tork was told by his friend from the Village folk scene, Stephen Stills. The show ran from 66 to 68. Peter bought out his contract in 68 and left. Mike did the same in 69. Mickey and Davy stayed on until the group dissolved in 70. In 1986 MTV (back when it was awesome) ran the Pleasant Valley Marathon changing the life of one Lisa Harmon from Nyack, NY. Life is made better by everything Monkees.
