I cannot see how Aung San Suu Kyi is deserving of any award when she has clearly failed to take a stand against the massacre of the Rohingya people in her country of Burma. Her statements have been ambiguous at best, often uttering a complete denial of what human rights observers have labelled borderline genocide, if not genocide itself. It is a shame that my university will be awarding her an honorary doctorate this Wednesday. I once held tremendous respect for this woman who struggled against tyranny for so long, but she has clearly demonstrated in the past two years that Burmese ethnic nationalism and political expediency governs her worldview. Think what you want of Aung San Suu Kyi, but being called a defender of human rights doesnt come with clauses. Period.
