I cant access my blog at the moment, so until I can do that heres what will be the entry for Sunday 16th November. Please take a look at Patrick Bobs photos below. The weather was absolutely glorious for todays puppy adoption afternoon at Whiskers N Paws, and I cant ever remember the terrace being so packed with people as well as the puppies themselves. Even with a full contingent of volunteer assistants it was difficult trying to give potential adopters my full attention and to answer all of the questions, the main one inevitably being “how big will it be?”. Its really impossible to know when the puppies are very young as they are all born roughly the same size and stay that way for a few months. Its only when theyre that little bit older that they start to change shape and facial features, and even then there can be a late growth spurt during the final quarter of their first year. I do still have a few puppies who are three months old and still so small that I cant believe that theyll grow into anything bigger than medium sized, but none of the puppies some with any guarantees in that regard. As usual it was those baby pups that attracted the most attention and two of them were adopted, although they wont be going home for a week. Two more older puppies had their adoptions confirmed after a weeks trial period, one of them being the lovely Loopy who charmed her new family as I knew she would. The second one was Donna, who didnt have to persuade the humans that she was a good fit rather the existing older dog (which she obviously did). There was one very special puppy back today after having missed last weeks session, and that was Hoppy, the sweet and very pretty girl who had to have her short leg amputated. Now that the wound has healed she is much happier without the burden of a useless limb, and far more active. In fact she probably had more potential adopters looking at her than any other puppy, and in the end she left for a trial with another ex-HKDR dog, Poncho. Two dogs were sent from Tai Po and surprisingly they were really quite nervous about being there and surrounded by puppies. It seems that my Lamma candidates are better able to handle the strange environment, probably because Im there with them, so I will revert to giving Imogen and others a try in future. Still, one of todays Tai Po dogs was successful in at least getting a tryout with our ex-HKDR dog Crimson, and good luck to sweet Leroy. Just as a reminder, as next Sunday is Peak to Fong day I wont be at Whiskers N Paws myself until much later in the afternoon, but the puppies will be there as usual along with regular volunteers to handle adoptions. It will be the first time since we started the Sunday puppy afternoons that I will miss the full three hours but also the first time that Ill be able to enjoy the entire Lan Kwai Fong party atmosphere. Ill be sharing the stage with co-host Bernie Lo for the competitions and introductions during the live entertainment breaks, and my only regret is that I wont be able to bring one of my own Lamma dogs along to enjoy the day. I would almost certainly nominate Griffin, but hell have to stay at home and sleep on my bed as he always does when Im out. One last final not regarding Peak to Fong, this Monday is the last day for online ticket/T-shirt orders and after that you will have to buy at any of the outlets listed on the website. We are almost at sell-out point so please dont leave it until the last minute as so often happens. This is a day you wont want to miss, and I have checked the weather just in case there is any chance of rain and Im assured by the HK Observatory that it will be perfect.
