I cant get down to Ashton Gate (The Wembley of The West) tonight, for what will be the last evening match in The Old East End. Its been ready for redevelopment for years, I’m looking forward to the finished piece. Sept 1965 I first walked up those mighty steps at the back of The East End to enter the gloom of covered terraces. But there in front bathed in sunlight, like a film set, stretched the green sward, vibrant, perfect, exciting, promising everything, promising anything, Promotion, Division 1, FA Cup. At age 10, everything about this was new, scary, compelling, life changing, I was on the other side of Bristol without a grown up, my 12 year old neighbour was deemed grown up enough, these were the most people I had ever seen, these are the most steps I had ever climbed. There; jaw dropped, giddy with excitement, stood a ten year old with beliefs unsullied by years, blissfully ignorant of the reality of life and football. The noise, the noise; my ten year old ears had never heard anything like it, deafening, frightening, but at that same moment, tribal, a rallying call. The moment you joined the in, you were part of a ten thousand headed creature, one being, created by thousands, cell like, you contribute to the whole, you are in.........you are safe.....we are City, 1,2,3,4,5 if you want to stay alive Keep Off The East End. For me it was if you want to feel alive, keep on The East End. Enjoy the evening comrades, Ill raise a glass of the mad apple this end, sit back, close my eyes and....... Aye yai de aye Gibson is better than Yashin, Garland is better than Eusabio and Rovers are in for a thrashing
