I cant imagine how desperate a parent has to be to send their child across 2 or more countries, often alone, so the child will be safe. I cant imagine how desperate and afraid a child would have to be to leave his parents and everything familiar to feel safe. Yet we think nothing of spending millions on football players and movie stars. Whatever happened to this --> “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Not anymore. We have prerequisites now. Well have to change the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. I propose, Give me your educated, your credentialed, your cubicle jockeys yearning to cash checks, the fluent doctors abandoning your teeming shores. Send these, the smart, the trained, to me: I lift my lamp beside the door of privilege.
