I cant publicly blog anymore. So this is a mini blog, because my inner blogger cant take this anymore. Read or don’t read; like it or don’t like, but I’ll probably do it again once my anger kicks in over Ferguson too. The execution of James Foley was disgusting, brutal, barbaric and inexcusable. I find it unbearable to even think about. But - This. Is. Not. Islam. Last week, I was approached by a guy in Mississippi who asked me - Why are so many Christians converting to Islam? Are they all ISIS-supporting barbarically inhumane individuals? Have we forgotten that Christianity was used to instigate, perpetuate and defend slavery for over 2 centuries? That it is STILL used to defend violent racism and homophobia, globally? Look outside the narrative that is fed to us by the media. We ought to be self-reflecting on our own societal failings towards the disenfranchised youth that are joining ISIS. We ought to be educating ourselves on the counter-terrorism measures that have been imposed on Muslims since 9/11 - imprisonment without trial, rendition, torture, drones and domestic espionage - which serve to strengthen the recruitment for groups such as ISIS. ISIS is growing and flourishing every day due to the fundamental failings of contradictory foreign policy in Iraq and Syria. In Iraq, we are trying to defeat ISIS, and in Syria, we are fighting the same fight as ISIS in trying to bring down Bassad. While the US and UK governments continue this confused, messed up, one foot on either side of the line game, ISIS recruits more and more members from Iraq and Syria and vice versa, and our governments’ policies go by unnoticed. Theres so much behind what is really going on with ISIS. Lets be smart enough not to use our horror at James Foleys death as an excuse to label religion as barbaric again. Lets be smart enough not to buy into the media narrative. Blaming religion serves no purpose but to horrify and instill fear amongst people and further divide a society that is already pretty appallingly divided.
