I cant remember, have I ranted on here about the rampant use of following guest on here? Its particularly bad in NYC and Im not sure why. Almost every day I hear a retail person say to people waiting in line: Following guest step down. This makes my ears bleed. There are two things wrong with this: 1) FOLLOWING: I am the NEXT customer. Not a following customer. This is grammatically incorrect. If someone had said will THE following guest step down: [NAME] that might have been correct. But it almost feels like it needs a list. 2) GUEST: Im not a guest. I think you can refer to someone as a guest if they are either a)staying overnight, or b)in your home and you are serving them a meal, or doing other stuff for free. If I am shopping in your store, you are selling things and Im going to buy them. By that definition I am a customer. Why cant I be a customer? Oh p.s. I asked retail people who said this, Who told you to say that? and was always told management and at UNIQLO i was told if we dont say it we will get fired. I almost wrote a letter to the UNIQLO management to tell them that they were making their retail people sound like uneducated idiots but then I realized it was a #firstworldproblem. :)
