I cant say I have been following the Oscar Pistorius story closely, but the BBC World Service has, and as my companion in the car Ive caught various stages of the trial. I, as I suspect like many outside of South Africa, consider his version of events to be, quite frankly, bullshit. You get up in the middle of the night and hear somebody in your bathroom with the door closed. Your girlfriend, the only other person you know to be in the house is not lying besides you in bed where you would expect her to be. Your first reaction is (a) my girlfriend is in the bathroom or; (b) theres an intruder in the bathroom and I must, without trying to ascertain who it is, shoot a fusillade of bullets through the closed door. His version is (b), which to my mind is either murder or at least criminally negligent manslaughter. Im still going with murder. But I suspect it is very hard for most of us to put ourselves in the mindset of some white South Africans and the baggage they carry.
