I cant say Ive been involved in the Irish film industry for very long but in my short time as a filmmaker, one thing that has impressed me most is the communal spirit and unconditional support shown to Independent filmmakers from every area of production. From cast and crew members, giving up their time for little or no pay, to family and friends coming together to help crowdfund projects; Then theres the larger production houses providing free to heavily discounted studio space and expertise and film equipment rental companies giving extraordinary deals with high end technology. And of course there are the film festivals that genuinely support and promote the films when they are made, giving filmmakers like myself an equal opportunity to have our voices heard. We know that, in an ideal world, the Irish Film Board would help out every production if they could but the truth is, the number of filmmakers out-weigh the amount of funding available in this country; or at least thats what I imagine is the case. Nevertheless; I just want to tip my hat to all those amazing lads and lasses out there for their heroic contribution to the Irish film industry because we know that at least 95% of the film projects we see being made today would not be possible without your support. The reason Im writing this now is because I just read an article on the IFTNs website featuring one such guy, Colin Browne, who is just one of probably hundreds of film industry professionals, who constantly extend their hand in support of low-to-no budget projects. I know, personally, I could name at least 30 people who constantly support me in my fledgling career, and ONE DAY I WILL thank each and every one of them properly; but for now, to all the unsung heroes of this wee Irish film industry; thank you for making it possible for many of us to call ourselves artists and filmmakers.
