I cant say that I am surprised by this ad. The advertising world - TopicsExpress

I cant say that I am surprised by this ad. The advertising world INVENTED sterotypes, so that various markets could be boxed, so that the clients point can be made and results achieved. It is true that there are dogs back home, much better off than some of our citizens. They receive Christmas presents, parlour treatments, vitamins and organic food. Poverty is SOOOO in our faces back home, and a sad reality in South Africa. Sure, we are culturally RICH, but many of our brothers and sisters are starving, or on the breadline. And many of the starving are dark skinned. Whatever the reasons, be they historical disadvantages, addictions, unemployment, children orphaned by AIDS, etc. Poverty is a sad REALITY. Thanks to the Peninsula Feeding Scheme, we received milk and peanut butter sandwiches in Summer- and soup and bread in the Winter at our schools on the Cape Flats. For some it was the only good meal that they would eat that day. I appreciate the point of this ad. I think that it encourages us to support the organisations that provide urgent nutrition to our developing children. I hope that this organisation finds good followers and supporters too, who are able to assist...and not just diss the intentions of the ad campaign. But I also think that a major point to be made is that the middle class, the people of South Africa, carry A HUGE LOAD in supporting communities, not only through taxes, but also with ground level involvement. Where is the the responsibility at government level? The state needs to modify budget allocations so that more of these feeding programmes are supported and malnutrition levels can decrease. And when will the issue of free and/or affordable QUALITY EDUCATION be addressed? Surely it should be a priority, to ensure that our nation is educated, so that the youth have more employment opportunities and are able to feed themselves. Teach a man to fish and all that?
