I cant speak for anyone else, but I am truly fed up with the amount of bigoted and disgraceful rhetoric coming out of the mouths of leaders these days. Many, whether Isma, Jakim or Dong Zhong, are in essence racist as their sole purpose of being is to perpetuate racial/cultural beliefs. Yes, we can and should be outraged at their narrow-mindedness and vile diatribe. But we do not create a change by helping them to perpetuate their hate. You can only beat hate with love. We do this by reaching out and by making friends with those who are not like us. To show that there is a bond of humanity that binds us all. I had an amazing English teacher in school whom I admired and treasurered very much, Zamrudah Hj Ahmad Rashidi. I had two best friends from my college days Shenola Matthews and Jyo Pattis. My partners in PAN are Alizakri Alias and Nell Ng. My beautiful friends include Elvira Arul, Chelsia Ng, Bernie Chan, Susheela Balasundaram.... all of whom are exemplary and inspiring Malaysians who see beyond the imposed religious/cultural/racial prescriptions for right minded Malaysians and who do their bits to reach out and to tell as many who will listen, that Malaysia is truly for all. We are no longer in siege! We need to move past the distrust that is being perpetuated and truly nest in the ties that bind us. Education being one of them. Vernacular schools much go to provide all Malaysians unfettered and meritocratic access to education to better the lives of all. Sounds ideal? Yes! But ideals have always proven to be the motor that drives us forwards! So lets choose to move forward for our nation. I shall begin my telling all my non-Chinese friends that I personally am grateful to have them in my lives and that together we can stamp out this menace. We can do this together.
