I cant stop thinking about this. Ive always been against the increasing militarization of the police. Since the late 80s riot squads and tear gas have been unleashed on peaceful protests. Preemptive raids have been made on puppeteers and sign makers to prevent demonstrations and squelch public discourse. Cops have acted like occupying armies in poor neighborhoods. And I can understand why college students would want to rebel , but this? They really make the riot police seem , if anything, a little too gentile. This was all taking place literally 2 blocks from a street festival with thousands of familys with kids (mine among them), and the food court where the elementary schools and local boy scouts and the soup kitchen had booths set up to raise money. This crowd moved on to flipping cars and breaking windows in a nursing home. At first it sounded incredibly lame when people at Keene State (who live on this street) claimed not to have any idea how it happened, but as the arrest reports come in its clear that it really was a kind of deranged flash mob of thousands of college age kids from all over the northeast who arrived geared up for mayham.
