I cant wait to get to meeting tonight....our topic is on the book Adoption Healing by Joe Soll. Finished reading Adoption Healing by Joe Soll a couple days ago. Wow....Ive read a few books on the adoption process, but this book was an eye opener. Joe is an adopted person and works in the professional environment around adoption. When I first started reading the book I thought I had a good understanding of adoption, but as he states in his book, it takes a lot of courage and support to start to feel the effects of adoption. The journey of natural parent and adopted person are parallel on so many levels. His concept about the fracturing that occurs was quite compelling. While reading the book, I started to understand that a lot of what I went through and continue to experience is based on post traumatic stress. We didnt have a name for it years ago, but the details very much cover my feelings post adoption. There are large parts of life that are just missing. People talk about places and things that I did with them and I have no memory of the events. Tuned out and turn off, but still co-existing in a world that I didnt recognize or understand. Reading this book has helped me to see that I wasnt crazy, but had experienced an un-diagnosed trauma. Interesting to look back now at the therapists I visited and not one had any experience in adoption. It wasnt even brought up in most sessions....why? I certainly didnt want to bring up the painful wounds that I was experiencing. I dont think they understood the importance of my trauma....placing a child into adoption. The first real acknowledgement came from an AA sponsor and she helped me walk through the pain. Then my feelings were validated by joining a post adoption support group. Honestly, I dont know where I would be today without those groups of folks. It should be an interesting meeting tonight and looking forward to the continued support and love shared in the group.
