I can’t let the week end without offering my condolences to the family of novelist Tom Clancy, who died this week in Baltimore at 66. Tom Clancy’s was a giant in the genre of military thrillers, and he knew his espionage tactics and military hardware so well that reading one of his novels was like getting a private briefing at the Pentagon. His list of best-sellers, many of them made into hit movies, included “The Hunt for Red October,” “Clear and Present Danger,” “Patriot Games” and more. Fans will be relieved to hear there’s one more Jack Ryan novel called “Command Authority,” coming in December. And how well did Tom Clancy know his subject? Well, he once wrote a novel called “Debt of Honor” about a terrorist crashing a passenger jet into the US Capitol. It was published seven years before the 9/11 attacks.
