I chanced upon this discriminatory ad on the Careers@Gov webpage. The relevant line states: Candidates with Degree Qualifications need not apply. If that is the case, why did our parents work so hard to put us through school and why are degree holders saddled with debts and unemployment/underemployment, especially those with “advanced degrees”? Of course nobody owes me a job, and certainly not the government, but this advertisement should be indication that there is something seriously wrong with the higher educational system and the way it correlates to job outcomes. The advertisement below may be a signal that the government is seeking to reduce future supply of graduates in the job market and is encouraging students to seek alternate educational pathways. But what about those of us with degrees already stuck in the current system? We need employers to keep an open mind with regards to job specifications they have in mind and be willing to go out of their comfort zone in employing people who able to bring diversity and new perspectives into the organization. And of course, discrimination such as in the advertisement below should not be tolerated.
