I changed my tyres on the Jeep in October from 28 to 31 fat 10.5 - TopicsExpress

I changed my tyres on the Jeep in October from 28 to 31 fat 10.5 wide tyres with deep treads and heavy siping for the Winter. I expected that Id lose some MPGs because that is the nature of larger tyres, but when I was filling up at the station it seems to have cut my MPG in more than half. For the last couple of weeks my readings have been saying Im getting 10MPG. I was getting between 18-21MPG this Summer. Heres the thing...I filled up and cleared the odometer before going to Portland the other day and on the way home I looked and the odometer said that Id travelled almost 20 miles. Well, it is 40 miles ONE way to Portland. It hit me that of course when I changed the tyre size, it threw the speedometer AND the odometer readings off...they are both calibrated for 27 tyres from the factory. I checked distance against my Garmin and it is registering less than half a mile for every mile I travel. The good news is that Im still getting around 18MPG and the new gear that will make the whole thing accurate again was only $40 with shipping. Should take about 10 minutes to switch out and it will be calibrated for the 31 tyres. :) I thought I was going to have to park the Jeep for all except off roading fun. That would have sucked.
